A synagogue in Finchley Central has surpassed its £300,000 fundraising target to refurbish its building.

More than 1,100 donors contributed to the match-funding campaign which will help improve the Finchley Federation Synagogue’s facilities, including a more flexible prayer space which can be used for events.

Its biggest single donation was £17,500 before being generously matched to £35,000.

The community, which was founded in 1951 and has about 100 members, runs multiple children’s services, and said it requires greater storage, library and learning spaces as the congregation grows.

Its new state-of-the-art renovation would include a kitchen, mezzanine, and better access for disabled congregants, as well as larger capacity for High Holy Days.

Executive board member Deborah Kay said: “We were delighted to see the community pull together to share the excitement of our building project with the wider community and so grateful for over 1100 donors’ support and generosity”.
